When is it time to upgrade my PC?

When you open your pc case and you can’t tell what color is motherboard, then its usually time to get some upgrades done. Seriously, unless you live in a dusty area, and your computer is 4+ years old you can start slowly upgrading things.

First I would start with a new motherboard and processor.

They are not even expensive anymore. For a quite decent price you can get yourself a very decent computer.

I am writing this, because today I had a client, who brought a computer for repair, since he couldnt figure out why there was no video output on the screen.

To be honest I didnt know either. But after few tests and little testing I quickly determined his motherboard was fried. So he went to get a new motherboard to match his OLD processor.

It seemed to me he was trying to save money, so I didnt say anything and just went along. However that was my mistake and now I am paying for it.

I replaced the motherboard, I put in everything back together, processor, heat sink and I turn computer on. It powered on nicely, bios screen came up and then in about 10 seconds computer shut off.

It didn’t take me long to figure out processor was overheating. Reaching maximum allowed temperature and then system was shutting down.

So I tried everything. I cleaned the sink, resealed it, checked fan (which works just fine). Ran it without sink or fan. and still same result.

conclusion? motherboard doesnt like processor :-) its like a brother from a different mother. blood type doesnt match.

tomorrow, I will encourage him to upgrade to a Quad or at least Dual core processor, so he at least has nice pc after all is said and done.

to your success!
